On the Space of Artists

On the Space of Artists was a project created in partnership between Hayley Megan French of Parramatta Artists’ Studios (PAS) and James Farley. The goal was to facilitate a program of engagement and exchange between artists from Western Sydney and the Riverina, with a focus on knowledge sharing and collaboration to contribute to artist networks and career sustainability.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the project was reimagined to include a series of “arts labs” where artists shared their studio process and mapped the more invisible aspects of artists’ studio space and practices. Themes included the value of productivity, the reciprocity of the studio space and the ecologies which support art practices in metropolitan areas and regional areas.

The project brought together Western Sydney-based artists Lill Colgan, Kirtika Kain, Gillian Kayrooz, and Riverina-based artists Greg Carosi, Alice Peacock and Pat Ronald.

An outcome of this project included ‘8 Doors’, a major outdoor installation and online exhibition presented at the ARTSTATE 2020 conference in Wagga. Our artists closed the ARTSTASTE conference with a roundtable discussion on the possibilities and limitations of practice and exchange between regional and metropolitan areas.
