Hello! My name is James. I am an artist, curator, teacher and amateur gardener based in Wagga Wagga, NSW. I’m a lecturer in photography at Charles Sturt University, where I am also the Director of the H.R Gallop Gallery.

My practice is ecological in flavour; promoting the integration of ecological thinking into my work, art, life, and community.

I work with photography in it’s expanded form, incorporating experimental and generative processes, collaboration, installation, and photobooks. My work is an ongoing critique of the enduring aesthetic traditions of Colonialism, Patriarchy and Capitalism. Recognising that I am both a beneficiary and one deeply implicated in the endurance of these systems, I use my practice to stay with and explore this trouble. I seek to muddy the waters of Western dualistic thinking to explore the more complex and interrelated realities of the Anthropocene.

More broadly, I am a passionate advocate for the development, promotion, and support of professional art practice in regional areas.

I have presented exhibitions, public programs and community workshops at Wagga Wagga Art Gallery (2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019), Broken Hill Art Exchange (2015, 2018), Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery (2017), the Western Plains Cultural Centre (2018) and Murray Art Museum Albury (2018). I have also presented work at BLINDSIDE in Melbourne (2016), Perth Centre for Photography (2017), and Firstdraft, Sydney (2018).

I have earned recognition in the form of numerous awards, prizes and grants, including Project Funding (2020), Artist Support Funding (2018) and a Young Regional Artist Scholarship (2015) from Create NSW. I was a finalist in the Bowness Photography Prize (2019), The National Photography Prize (2018) and was named the NSW/ACT Young Achiever of the Year (Arts) in 2016.
